Match Report: Gresford Athletic FC vs Druids

A tough afternoon for Druids at Clappers Lane yesterday. The lads staged a late comeback and almost grabbed a point right at the death, but the home side did enough to win the match 2-1.
A similar line up to last weekend’s 3-1 win at home to Buckley Town, Druids were looking to make it 5 wins on the bounce when we travelled to Gresford Athletic yesterday afternoon. The lads were forced to quickly adjust to the grass surface at Clappers Lane after playing on the 3G at The Rock throughout the week. It was a physical game right from the off, with tackles flying in as both sides tried to take control.
A very tight affair so far and not much to report by way of chances for either side. However just before the break, a flick on up front, fell towards forward Adam Hesp who headed into the net to give the home side the lead.
We went into the break 1-0 down but confident we would create more chances and be able to get back into it.
It remained very competitive as the second half began, however on 56 minutes, Gresford doubled their lead. Winger Dominic Deacon was slipped through on goal and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
A big task for Druids now with 30 minutes to go. But the lads didn’t give up and really took the game to our opposition, pinning them back and getting balls into their box. We pulled one back on 88 minutes through manager Neil Ashton, who had slotted in for us at centre half. The lads threw everything at our opponents for the remaining minutes and were unfortunate not to grab a late equaliser. However Gresford held on for the 3 points in an entertaining, competitive match at Clappers Lane.
The result leaves us in 5th place only through goal difference, as we remain level on points with Prestatyn Town in 4th. A tough afternoon for Druids as our win streak comes to an end, but a great attitude shown by the lads to get back into the game and almost equalise at the death.
We look to bounce back next Saturday when we return to The Rock against Penrhyncoch FC.
We keep going!
