Our Elite Development Squad (EDS) had been working hard the past few weeks, with trial matches, fitness testing and squad trainings to prepare for their first pre-season fixture against Llangollen Town First Team.
It proved to be a tough and exciting match with Llangollen starting very strongly, using their experience and size to unsettle our EDS lads. After only 25 minutes, our opponents had taken a commanding 3-0 lead and were looking confident to go on and get a few more before halftime. However, the EDS didn’t let their heads drop, staying organised defensively and began working their way back into the game. The slick, possession-based football we know we can produce began to come out and we managed to get one back, going into halftime 3-1 down.
Whatever was said during the break by manager Jordan Hadaway clearly had the desired effect. The EDS began piling on the pressure on Llangollen in the second half and the sudden shock of playing against a senior first team had faded. Our superior fitness began to show as the EDS lads gained the upper hand and were dominating the game. It ended a brilliant result for the club as we turned the game around and won 5-4!
Every player gave 100% for the entire match, including the subs who made a great difference when they came on. Eleven of the fourteen man squad were 17 years of age or under, which says a lot about the attitude and resilience of the team, earning a result like that against a senior side.
EDS Manager Jordan Hadaway spoke after the game,
“A very good performance from all the lads today and it was good to see us go head to head with a first team. If we work as hard as we did today, we won’t go far wrong this season, well done to all the lads.”
A great day for the club overall and big thank you to Llangollen for an entertaining, competitive match. We look forward for the EDS’s next fixture on the 16th of June when we host Cefn Mawr Rangers.
More than just a football club.
